What can I expect if I sign up for the trial?
After you fill out the survey you received in the invitation email, we will follow up within a week or two to let you know if you qualify for the trial and to give you more information about next steps.
Will there be any cost to me?
No. Peer Collective will provide its services for free for the duration of the trial.
Why do I need to input a credit card?
Peer Collective’s system is set up so that inputting a credit card is required to create an account. However, you will not be charged for any peer counseling that is part of the research trial.
How long will the research trial last?
You will receive up to 1-hour/week of online peer counseling for 6 weeks.
Who will be providing the peer counseling?
Peer collective’s peer counselors are not licensed therapists. They are people who’ve been chosen for their exceptional empathy and emotional intelligence, and who have been trained and are supervised by licensed professionals.
What kind of training do the peer counselors receive?
All peer counselors complete a video assessment that measures "common factors" such as warmth, empathy, and alliance-building. Only the top 2-3% of applicants are selected. After passing the assessment, peer counselors must pass tests on ethics, privacy, crisis escalation, and peer counseling techniques. Peer counselors must then pass ongoing spot tests on dealing with difficult cases in addition to receiving ongoing supervision and support.
Why is peer counseling expected to help?
Putting our challenges into words can have health benefits (Pennebaker, 1993) and having a listener accept and understand one’s emotions is therapeutic (Volgast et al., 2011). Many of the benefits of therapy derive from “common factors” such as therapeutic alliance and positive regard (Wampold, 2015), which can be taught to nonprofessionals (Bernecker et al., 2020).
